Customer Spotlight: A Landfill Manager’s Real-World Experience

Dan Chetterbock, Manager of the Rock Springs Landfill, shares his thoughtful and candid experience with the Stellar ScaleTech web app—from the simplicity and usability of the platform, to our commitment to customer support and cloud-based security. His story highlights the real-world impact of our mission to make landfill operations more efficient, user-friendly, and resilient.

When I set out to look for a new scale software, 3 things were major determining factors for me.
1 – Simplicity and Usability

Simplicity and Usability
Being a former Scale house employee and having to work with complicated scale software with a steep learning curve, I wanted to change that. I wanted to integrate a system where either a new hire or someone covering for an employee could come in and learn the software quickly and also remember how to use it. Stellar software allowed me to do that. Due to its simple design and friendly user interface, a new user does not feel overwhelmed and within one day can easily learn to weigh a vehicle in and out. When your staff can focus on screening and communication with the customer, it makes for a better experience at the entry of your landfill. When scale software is simple, it becomes a tool and not a task. This is what the Stellar system accomplishes. Simple.
What about data migration or existing data entry?
This was a big concern for me, as on a previous software upgrade to Metler Toledo Data Bridge, I had to do a week’s worth of manual data entry to get that software up and running. This is not the case with Stellar software. Simply send them an Excel spreadsheet with your current customer and vehicle database, and their team of experienced and knowledgeable programmers will incorporate it into the program for you. Simple.
What about entering new customers and vehicles?
One of the things that really stuck out to me with the Stellar software was the “wizard” style guided approach to doing tasks within the software. Most everything you do, from adding a vehicle to generating invoices to paying tickets, is done in a process where the software guides you through it. Adding a vehicle or customer is simple and can be done with a few mouse clicks and by answering a few questions. Simple.
For me, as a manager and being my own secretary, the ability to take care of the Accounts Receivable side of things without manual data entry was extremely beneficial to me. The invoicing and payment system on the Stellar software is unmatched. On my current setup, I would have to do a bunch of manual data entry into QuickBooks, then scan tickets and invoices into PDFs, and then email them out. This was an hour and a half to 2 hour process every day. With the Stellar software, this is all integrated and turns this process into a 20 to 30-minute job. Amazing, simply amazing. To this day, I am just blown away at how simple and quick the invoicing process is.

Customer Service and Support
This area of searching for a new scale software was very important for me. In the end, it was this area that was the determining factor that set apart the Stellar software from others that I tried. I cannot say enough positive things about Patty and her team at Stellar. Whenever I have had a question or a comment, they are always quick to respond and answer. The Mettler Toledo software that I was using took days to get a response and weeks to get a resolution. This is not the case with Stellar software. If you have a problem or need help, the team is quick to respond and have a solution. What I find particularly amazing is the fact that when I have a suggestion to make the software better, that suggestion is incorporated in a new update very quickly. I love this because it’s as if the software is designed around my Landfill and my employees. The customer service and attention that you get are unmatched.
I believe one of the things that makes great customer service and support for a company is the people behind that service and support.
Who am I doing business with?
The first time I met Patty and her team at a WSWRA conference, I was blown away at how personable they were. They had families just like me and enjoyed Wyoming and its recreation just like me. They cared for others and took time to get to know the people around them.
In the meetings and conversations that followed, this became more and more evident. The team at Stellar isn’t interested in just selling you a piece of software and moving on; they get involved and stay involved with you. They form a relationship with you and become part of your landfill family. I do not have the words to describe how good the people are behind the product. This factor still continues to amaze me, and I know it will continue into the future.
Cloud-Based Platform
Mettler Toledo Data Bridge Software and one other software that I demoed were system/server-based. While this is nice in areas where internet is a problem, it is not nice if you want to remote into the software or have remote backup.
The coolest thing (at least for me) is the ability to have access to the program from anywhere. I can simply log in and help an employee or do invoicing from anywhere. This is incredible, as I can take a vacation or a business trip and handle the AR side of things from anywhere. In the past, I would have employees scan tickets and then email them to me, and then have to take QuickBooks with me on my laptop to get invoices done. If I didn’t, I would return to the office and have a pile of invoices waiting for me. Now I just simply login from anywhere and take care of business. There was a lot of thought put into the AR and remote side of things by Stellar, and it shows.
Cyber Attack and Ransomware Proof
One of the great things about cloud-based software is the security that it provides. Recently, we were the victims of a Ransomware attack on our server. Because we had our data backed up in the cloud and our scale software was cloud-based, we didn’t miss a beat. We simply restored our files from backup, logged into our cloud-based scale software, and were up and running. Outside of inconvenience, the Ransomware attack was nothing.
